Four Season Adventure: Getting out With Sunrise Mountain Guides

Getting out With Sunrise Mountain Guides

With the headquarters for Sunrise Mountain Guides at the foot of Mt. Mansfield in Stowe, Vermont, we don't have to travel far to find spectacular hiking — from a gentle stroll along Ranch Brook in the historic Ranch Valley to the top of Vermont's highest peak via the legendary Long Trail. Our local knowledge of the terrain and current conditions along with history and lore will ensure your outing to be enjoyable and memorable.

Each hike begins with a briefing of current trail conditions and weather. They will l discuss your preferences for route difficulty, durations, and special interest and concerns. With your direction, we'll design a hike to meet your expectations.

Rock Climbing Courses

This half-day outing is perfect for families, groups or anyone who wants to try out climbing for the first time. The focus will be on shorter “top roped” climbs for every ability level. This is an excellent opportunity for those who are new to the sport. We will focus on safety, communication, technique and a variety of equipment.

This course is designed to take the next step in rock climbing. Rock climbing 201 is for small groups that have a desire to bring it up a notch. We will cover equipment, route selection for your ability, multi-pitch climbing, and rappelling. You will become more confident in climbing, belaying, and working with climbing equipment.

Trail Running

It's a secret no longer. Trail running is the perfect exercise for mind and body. If you're new to running or a seasoned competitive racer, trail running builds strength, endurance, core muscles, and balance while alleviating stress.

Join us for a trail run along the beautiful Ranch Brook in the historic Ranch Valley, the birthplace of skiing in Stowe. With moderate hills, we’ll run from three to five miles in the Mt. Mansfield State Forest.  It's a great way to start your day.  If you dare, we invite you to have a dip in the swimming hole when you're done.  Brrrrr!

Ice Climbing Courses

This course is an introduction to waterfall ice climbing. Depending on your time and energy we will make this half or full-day experience exciting for all ages and abilities.

NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! Sunrise Mountain Guides provides all technical equipment. See the gear list for clothing and packing tips

This course assumes some experience on ice.  You've done some top roping; you know your knots and you may have some of your own equipment.  If you've caught the ice bug and are ready for the next step, this course is for you!  Ice 201 is traditionally a full day, but we can cater a half-day if the need is required.

Snow Shoeing Courses

No matter what the weather or conditions, snowshoeing is a winter activity that can be enjoyed by all. Follow the Mill Trail past the old Turner Mill blacksmith shop and Dr. Marguerite Lichtenthal’s historic cabin to the majestic Bingham Falls Gorge.  Or explore the historic Ranch Valley and Ranch Brook at the foot of Mt. Mansfield, the birthplace of skiing in Stowe.

Are you looking to get away from it all?  A little peace and tranquility?  Come with us to the undiscovered part of Stowe. We’ll take you off the well-established trail. From our headquarters here at the foot of Mt. Mansfield on Notch Brook lies the Green Mountain State Forest and two permanently preserved Stowe Land Trust properties.
