Vermont craft beer is famous for its IPAs, Doubles, Triples, NE, and American. But what about you Saison lovers? Saison, known as Farmhouse Ales, is of French/Belgian origin and is literally brewed in local farmhouses. Here are 5 locally-made Saisons to enjoy.

River Roost Brewery

River Roost Brewery in White River Junction offers a Saison du Roost available in 750 ml bottles. Their Saison is aged in Oak Foeders and is offered at the 32oz price. River Roost Brewery is open Tuesday-Sunday from Noon to 6 PM. The growlers can be cleaned and brought back to refill as many times as you’d like!

Zero Gravity

Zero Gravity Craft Brewery located on Pine Street in Burlington offers a Bobolink Saison, available in draft, 16oz 4-packs, and 500ml bottles. Their Saison is dry and effervescent with notes of organic pale and jasmine rice and is golden in appearance. The Bobolink Saison was actually brewed to support the Bobolink Odyssey, which is a research project that studies the migration of the Bobolink birds. In fact, Zero Gravity donates $1 from every 4-pack and 500ml bottle purchase to the Bobolink Odyssey.

Hill Farmstead

Hill Farmstead Brewery, located in Greensboro Bend, offers 4 different Saisons. Farmer Wave is brewed with oats, lime zest, lime juice, and salt and is named after the “finger wave” farmers give each other as they drive by. The Festival of Farmhouse Ales 2019 is a blended, barrel-aged Saison-style beer aged in a wine barrel and rests at 6% ABV. The Myth of Saison is a Saison-style beer brewed with “Citra” and “Amarillo” hops, VT wildflower honey, and Pennsylvania Basswood honey, and rests at 7% ABV. Hill Farmstead’s final Saison is called Wachu Saison and is brewed with rice, Yuzu juice, Yuzu zest, and Szechaun peppercorns. This Saison was brewed to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Grassroots Brewing by Hill Farmstead’s own Shaun Hill.

Lawson's Finest Liquids

Lawson’s Finest Liquids is located in Waitsfield and offers their version of a Saison, called the App Gap Saison. Their Belgian-style ale has a spicy undertone with fruity yeast-driven esters and an effervescent, dry finish. Resting at 4.5% ABV, you can find App Gap Saison in their Taproom, as well as locations around the area.

Hermit Thrush Brewery

Hermit Thrush Brewery located in Brattleboro offers Gin Barrel Saison, aged in Barr Hill Tom Cat Gin barrels. Tom Cat Gin uses juniper as its sole botanical, is back-sweetened with estate honey, and aged in New American Oak. Hermit Thrush wanted to let the flavors of this amazing gin shine, so they age a pale bale for 8-12 months, and then use their house-mixed culture to ferment. The fruitiness of their yeast compliments the floral honey nuances and vanilla character from toasted new oak to create an utterly complex and unique beer.
